MOTORCROSS events have come a long- way in SRI LANKA, since introduced in 1984 or so. Due to ever increasing popularity of these events, a number of challenging tracks have been developed in many zones in this small tropical island, lying at the tip of the Indian Continent.

The name -“Gayan Sandaruwan” is synonymous with motorcross racing in the Island. Over the years, Gayan has established a niche in the Motorcross arena with his skilled, talented, determined and highly acclaimed riding, placing him in the forefront in the sport in the country. He continues to dish out awesome riding skill and display at competitions to date.

Gayan commenced his racing career at the tender age of 17 years, whilst yet a student at high school. His interest in the sport was flamed by the fact that his whole family is involved in the business of Motor cycles - and Motorcycle sport.

His father has first hand knowledge in motorcycle racing - himself having participated at road racing events conducted at various venues. Gayan’s uncles too were famed motorcycle riders during the 1970s and 80’s and has had a huge impact on young Gayan, prompting him to take-up the sport. He is indeed fortunate to have had the guidance of his father - and his uncles.

Gayan entered the Motorcross field first in 2001 and since, has never looked back. In 2003, he won his first Motorcross accolade by winning the Sri Lankan Championship - the “SLARDAR CHAMPIONSHIP”. Encouraged by this performance Gayan has participated at all major Motorcross events conducted in the country accumulating the most prized trophies offered for the sport. He has continued to dominate the Motocross sport scene in the country winning the National Championship EIGHT times - thus laying claim as the undisputed champion of Motorcross racing in the country. He holds the most number of “wins” in the sport.

In 2008, he travelled overseas to gain experience and test his standing in the international arena. He represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Motor cross championship and did the country proud.

He has built a vast fan base in Sri Lanka and is a household name in Motorcross racing in the country. He continues with the sport and we could expect greater achievements in the future from this determined young rider.

CEAT-SLADA Champions Crowned At Glitzy Awards Night
The champions of Sri Lanka’s racetracks were crowned in fitting style at the 2013 CEAT-SLADA Championship Awards Night on Saturday, 7th December, in a gala culmination of the motor racing season.

Champion rider Gayan Sandaruwan clinched the Best Rider 2013 award as the main award on offer for the Best Driver 2013 was held back from being awarded pending an inquiry at the CEAT-SLADA Championship Awards Night which was held last Saturday in Boralesgamuwa.

Gayan take major honours at Sigiriya Rally
The fifth edition of the ‘Sigiriya Rally Cross ended last Sunday with Gayan Sandaruwan and Ashan Silva main trophies at the ‘Sigiriya Air Force Base circuit.’ The Rally Cross was organised by Sri Lanka Air Force Motor Sports Council and was conducted by Sri Lanka Autosports Drivers Association.This year the events set for the under-10 and under-13 age group motor cycle events were not conducted in keeping with recent restrictions on motor racing at this age category.


SLARDAR crown country’s racing stars

Sri Lanka’s motor racing calendar for 2012 came to a dramatic and colourful close when the country’s top two drivers and riders were crowned in gala style at the CEAT-SLARDAR Championship Awards Night.

In honour of their hi-octane performances during the season, the most prestigious awards of the night — the Championship awards — were presented to drivers Dinesh Deheregoda, winner of the SLGT Super Car event and Ashan Silva (SL H 1600), and to riders Gayan Sandaruwan (MX Racing up to 250cc) and Jacques Gunawardena (MX Racing up to 85cc) the Under 16 champion.

Gayan and Pasindu Best Rider and Driver
Gayan Sandaruwan equalled the number of Rider’s Awards at Fox Hill with weteran rider Ananda Wedisinghe while Pasindu Peiris won the award for the best driver at the 20th edition of the Fox Hill Supercross which conluded at the at Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyatalawa yesterday.

Sandaruwan now stands equal with Wedisinghe, winning the best rider’s award on six occasions in the 20 year Fox Hill Supercross history. But Wedisinghe is still regarded as the best rider in the Fox Hill history, winning the award in six consecutive years, without being a joint champion in any of those occasions.

CEAT racers in strong debut at Fox Hill
In their first outing as members of the newly-formed CEAT Racing Team, two drivers and the lone motorcyclist achieved podium finishes at four of the five races they competed in, at the Fox Hill Supercross on 21st April 2012.

Lt. Colonel Duminda Jayasinghe (Group SL N Ford Laser/ Mazda 1500 cc) and W A G Rangana (Group SL Cars Special up to 1500cc ) were placed second in their respective events, while Gayan Sandaruwan took top honours winning both races for MX Motor Cross Bikes (up to 125cc two-stroke or up to 250 cc four-stroke).
